An issue with landfills is the toxic chemicals that are created. Methane for example is created from decomposing garbage and is a threat to our ecosystem. The methane will evaporate into the air and go into the ground, threatening our water supply.
By recycling smarter, we can help make the need for more and more landfills smaller. Think about our future.

Random Fact of the day
Americans make more than 200 million tons of garbage each year, enough to fill Bush Stadium from top to bottom twice a day!
Wasted Recyclables
This is what happens to contaminated recyclables. This truck has 12,000lbs of stuff that could have been recycled but instead is going to the landfill to dump it all.

Did you know?!
- A single plastic bag can shut down an entire material recovery facility if it gets caught in its machinery!
- Just 5 grams of drink ware, glass or Pyrex in a recycling bin can contaminate a tonne of bottle and jar glass because it melts at a different temperature!
- Paper rotting in landfill produces methane. Recycling paper avoids these emissions. Soiled paper that can’t be recycled can be composted.

T-shirt Idea, take the poll!
We would appreciate it if you would take the time to take our poll based on this image idea for the campaign!

Garbage vs Recyclables
There is a difference between the two! When you throw trash into a recycling bin you're actually causing more of a problem because then the rest of the recyclables in that bin are considered contaminated and will be disposed of. Think before you do!

About the Campaign

This is a brand new campaign
called Smart Recycling. I’ve seen way too many people
throwing garbage into recycle bins without knowing what the repercussions
are. I want this campaign to be a peaceful campaign that will present factual
information about recycling. People need to be told about the
importance of recycling, and have knowledge about doing it in the proper
way. I believe people aren’t educated properly when it comes to
recycling. A majority of people don’t know the benefits. Also the
people who are throwing trash into a recycle bin do not know that they are
actually hurting the system. If people can be taught how to do it the
right way, the system can be more successful than it already is. When a
recycling bin has too many contaminants or non-compostable material, the whole
thing is considered contaminated and is actually just sent to a landfill
anyway. I’ve seen this happen often on the West Chester University
campus, where kids are actually throwing trash into these bins. I don’t
think these people are doing this on purpose, I just think that they do not
know that they are doing wrong.
